Surf and Paddle Communities Race for a Cause
Ocean enthusiasts from across San Diego will gather for this year’s Iron Mike Festival, a community fundraiser on Sunday, August 18th, 2019, at Fletcher Cove Park. The day is presented by surfboard recycling company, Rerip, the City of Solana Beach and the Solana Beach Lifeguard Association.
Activities include:
5 Mile Paddle Race (SUP or prone)
The Grom-O-Rama - Youth Surf Contest
sponsored by Rushall, Reital & Randall Accountancy.
Water events start at 8am, but get there early to participate in the morning Beach Yoga by @yogasurflove or Beach Clean up by Daana Blue or try out a new stick with demos by Firewire Surfboards.
This all-ages event will feature the Surfride Board Swap, Elliptigo bike demos, and a silent auction and raffle sponsored by Swell Property, including an Isle SUP, Firewire surfboard and top quality gear from Quiksilver, Pelagic San Diego, and James and Joseph Spearfishing. Vendor booths will include Pilates Del Mar, and ocean fine artist, Wade Koniakowsky, will be painting live as Limpet (acoustic) and Lost Monarchs (jam rock) take stage from 10am-1p.
Don’t forget to enjoy a few at The Lost Abbey beer garden as you meet old and new friends celebrating Mike, the Lifeguard who passed away before his time in a back country skiing avalanche. All proceeds raised help fund scholarships in his name for youth entering life-saving careers.
Lifeguard and longtime participant Lisa Randall comments, “the day is just such a warm gathering of all of the best people I know.” Rerip encourages you to carpool, bring an old board to donate, and remember your reusable cup as you get your festival on!
BACKGROUND
Celebrating Mike’s memory and good vibe started in 2009 when three Solana Beach Lifeguards paddled from San Onofre to Solana Beach in his honor. After a few years figuring out how to make Mike's paddle an annual event, the Lifeguards teamed up with Rerip, who normally planned “The Future of Surfing” event, a celebration of sustainability in surfing, around the same time. The two organizations fused their purposes together and are now presenting the 6th Iron Mike Festival.
